Mental Health Week
Allison Cannavan
For mental health week we had a guest speaker in, named Allison Canavn. Her speech was really moving. She spoke about how she suffered with underlying depression since she was fourteen or fifteen and went straight into modelling at fifteen, when she was at a quite fragile state. She didn't realise she suffered with depression until she was a little older. At that stage her depression had given her extreme anxiety. She said she even became very nervous on an airplane, which wasn't good considering how much she had to travel in her area of work. She spoke very personally about depression and anxiety which made the talk really interesting. I highly enjoyed her talk.
Aware workshop
On Friday the 10th of November we took part in an Aware workshop. A man named Steve, from Aware, came in to talk to us about bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety. He told us how to identify if we might suffer with theses mental health issues. He also taught us a way to deal with our feelings if we do have any of those three issues. It was a very educating and, could be, helpful talk.
On the 15th of November our YSI group had a talk about the Peter McVerry Trust from a man named France's Doherty. He talked to us about the homelessness crisis in Ireland and what Peter McVerry Trust do to help abolish homelessness. He also gave us a few different ideas of what our YSI group can do, as we chose homelessness for our cause. He really opened our eyes to how bad the homelessness really is in Ireland and we will do everything we are able to, to help the crisis.
Tiglin
Hayley Murphy, Chris and John came in to talk to our YSI group about what they do and what Tiglin is all about. I brought Hayley in to the school because i knew about her work and what she and Tiglin do to help the homeless. i had tears in my eyes at the end of the talk though and so did many others in our YSI group because John's story of his life when he was homeless was so emotional and moving and Tiglin's message is absolutely inspiring. It was an unforgettable hour.
