East Coast Fm
For my first week of work experience I was with East Coast Fm. It was an amazing week. On the first day of work experience I got to sit with a woman called Claire and watch how she organised what was going to be on the radio for the week. She got in contact with people to come in and talk about whatever they specialise in, as entertainment for the public. On that day, after the lunch break, I also got to sit in the studio with a man named Tommy Greene. He showed me how the control board works and how he knows when to speak.
On the second day, I was addressing envelopes for a woman named Anne. Then, later that day, I went in to the sound engineer, named Rob, and learn about what he does. He creates the advertisements for East Coast Fm. He had to put a recording he had previously received on his computer. Then he had to choose the correct music to go with the person's voice and the theme of the ad. It sounds a lot easier than it is and looks. During his break, he let me choose a song for an ad he was working on at the time. I chose three different songs, just in case one or two of them didn't suit the ad. It turned out in the end that he used all three for that ad and two other ads he had lined up.
On the third day, I helped Anne decorate the Christmas tree. I also was given a job of researching certain information about Christmas for them to talk about on the radio such as, unusual facts , cracker jokes, songs and movies.
On the fourth day, I was given the job of re-organising a complicated set of files. I organised them all within an hour, which Anne was not expecting so she had nothing else for me to do until later that day. So i asked if I could sit in with Rob again because i found his job very interesting. A couple of people came in to the studio for Rob to record their voices for ads. He recorded one person over the phone and projected their voice in a separate studio. It was so interesting to see how much technology has progressed.
I wasn't supposed to come in on the Friday because East Coast Fm do a four day work experience but i asked if they needed any extra help and they said they would love the extra help, so I came in for two hours that day. I was told to make some phone calls for reception and to call people who won prizes on the radio that week. Then, when I was saying goodbye to everybody, I was offered a summer job there!! It was a highly enjoyable work experience.

Sunbeam House
I worked with Sunbeam House in Bray on the week of the 26th of February. It was the week of the bad snow here so unfortunately I only got to work with Sunbeam House for only one day. The one day I was there for was very educational and humbling, I enjoyed getting to know all of the people there. I went with the walking team for the first half of the day and we walked bray head. It was so much fun chatting with everyone during the walk. For the rest of the day I played board games such, as connect four, as it was raining outside. It was a good experience.
Purple House
From the 9th to the 13th of April I worked with Purple House Cancer Support in Bray. This was definitely one of the best experiences in my life so far. Everybody was amazing and I loved getting to know all of them. On the first day I got to sit in a meditation class and art class. I enjoyed talking to the people who visited there so much, we chatted throughout the art class. I also did a run to the shop to get milk and a few other items for them.
On the second day I went to the bank and exchanged change for Purple House and observed how the classes worked. Which was very interesting.
On the third day I was at the reception desk with Aisling, she showed me how to put information from phone calls and appointments into the computer. She was so kind and it was interesting to see what she does there.
On the fourth day Veronica brought me in to a group of ladies to chat with them and get to know them. They were all so funny and they were telling me all of their gossip. It was so humbling to sit there and chat with all of these amazing ladies. Later that day I ran to the shop and bought a few things that they needed and then i started to photocopy and prepare sheets for a children's support group that was happening the following Monday.
On the last day I went to the bank again and I got to work up in their charity shop, which is absolutely beautiful. I was sorting through clothes and hangers which I was more than happy to do. It has some really nice clothes that I had decided I was definitely coming back with money to buy :). At the end of the day then I finished photocopying and putting the sheets in folders for the group coming on Monday. When I was leaving I got a lovely card from Veronica and all the team at Purple House and Veronica asked me if I would like to volunteer regularly from then on and now I go up and volunteer there on Wednesday's after school. I love going up to Purple House and enjoyed my work experience week there immensely.
